Puttin' on the 'rents

Tryin' mighty hard to look like Gary Cooper. Super duper. One of the saddest things one sees in stories in the news media or even on YouTube or Google video or in blogs is parents displaying an obviously autism spectrum child doing the equivalent of a buck and wing, like the child is a trophy or something, and calling the child "nearly recovered" or "cured." Usually, this is done to make a claim for the effectiveness of some particular treatment. Sometimes these "recovered child" videos are available on the websites of quack doctors who pitch their snake oil treatments to parents using these supposedly stunning before and after videos. Autism Diva watched a supposedly straight researcher from the MIND Institute use a video borrowed from a quack in a conference presentation (the borrowed video is on the quack's website) to show the improvements made by a little girl over the period of a little more than a year. She went from being a two-year old throwing tantrums --- NO! Really? A two year old throwing a temper tantrum? Shocking! --- maturing into a four year old interacting nicely with some adults. All of this is attributed to the wonders of the quack therapy, of course. Autism Diva is not saying that this little girl was not autistic, but the little girl looks pretty close to normal, even as a temper tantrum throwing 2 year old. Like they don't know that normal kids make huge strides in cooperating with adults from age 2 to 4. All of this comes about because the parents are so anxious to declare a victory in their seige on "the child's autism" and because they have wobbly definitions of what "recovered" is. These prounoncements of recovery are sometimes backed up by school administrators who are more than happy to agree that a child getting special ed services no longer needs them. Also, it doesn't take that much editing to make an autistic kid look normalish for a few seconds at a time on a video, just as selective editing can make an autistic child look like a total monster. As diagnoses are pushed to younger ages it will be easier for a non-autistic child to be misdiagnosed at age 11 months, for example, and then have a miraculous turn around and look non-autistic a year later. The "cure" will be attributed to whatever was done to the child in that time. One never hears about a "miracle cure" that works for a kid who is obviously autistic at age 8 and then not at age 9. Snake oil peddlers whose treatments fail on these older kids wring their hands and say, "Oh, if only you had brought him to us sooner!" None of this is to say that parents shouldn't show off their children's talents, it's just that the audience should feel like they are applauding a child's own skill and effort, and not applauding not some injections or a quack's brilliance at finding a cure for the dreaded moster autism. Autistic adults describe in detail the way they have learned to "pass for normal" in order to take the stress off in certain situations. Passing for normal, smiling when you don't want to smile, suppressing a desire to flap or perseverate on trains. It helps in some situations to get along with normal people, but it shifts the stress to elsewhere in the psyche because one isn't allowed to be one's self. The person working so hard to act normal can end up resenting the people he or she is trying to please. Like a (not autistic) UC Davis student Autism Diva knows, the student's mother expects her to be a pharmacist. The student switched out of the pre-pharmacy program at UCD a year ago and into an engineering program. Now the engineering student has to make up a pretend schedule of pre-pharmacy classes each quarter to tell her mother about. That's a lot of stress, but less stress than dealing with an angry disappointed mother, apparently. More lessons in psychobiology and child psychology from Young Frankenstein: Everyone's greatest fear, an Abby Normal brain. Click here for one more. Gene Wilder starts out demonstrating Son Rise techniques (Do NOT open this door!) and moves on to Bettelheim's specialty (the child just needs to be loved,) and then on to almost acceptance therapy: "People hate you, but WHY do they hate you? Because THEY are JEALOUS!" "Listen to me. You are NOT Evil, YOU ARE -- GOOD!" "This is a NICE BOY. ... This is a mother's angel!" "We LOVE him!" PG rated. Autism Diva time steps

Steering autism research

Posted on June 08, 2008 in Generic prescription drug list

Would you like to have a voice in how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) spends it's autism research dollars? The NIMH may be getting a windfall of cash for autism research by way of the "Combatting Autism Act." Whether or not they get that windfall, money will continue to be spent on autism research. Whether that research will benefit humanity to a greater or lesser degree depends on how the money is spent. Many people shudder at the thought of science driving a big eugenics campaign where every last unfavored gene is scrubbed from the gene pool by culling or sterilizing the genetically defective , though it should be noted that not all studies of genetics are aimed at eugenics. If prenatal testing for autism sounds bad to you, for instance, or if another kind of research bothers you, what kinds of sensible research can be done with all that money? And how can you have a say in how the money is spent? Autism Diva has two suggestions. The simpler suggestion is: go read this petition that will be sent to the NIH/NIMH, and if you agree with it, sign it. Signatures are needed before January 16th, it would probably be better to sign it by the Friday the 12th as that would give someone a chance to send the petition to the NIMH properly by the Tuesday the 16th. A few hundred or a thousand signatures would be really great. The other suggestion is a little more complicated. On November 30th of last year, Kathleen Seidel shared the details of a request from the National Institute of Mental Health for public input into the way they will spend their money on autism research. The NIMH is already getting advice from a bunch of different Federal agencies, each of which has some kind of oversight of some aspect of autistic citizens' lives, and from a few private organizations all with the same kind of "Cure Autism Now" exclusionary (no autistics allowed) viewpoint. As Kathleen's blog entry states: A request for public comments from a federal agency is one of the few circumstances whereby citizens and private organizations can communicate directly with the powers that be. Although the Committee is under no obligation to agree with public comments, under law, they must read them all and take them into account in their deliberations. Often, the agency will post a summary of public comments and responses. This is your materialize to communication to NIMH . TIME magazine: What autism epidemic?

Posted on June 08, 2008 in Generic prescription drug list

From the latest TIME magazine. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007 What Autism Epidemic? By Claudia Wallis Epidemic is a powerful word. It generates bold headlines, congressional hearings, research dollars and dramatic, high-stakes hunts for culprits. It's a word that has lately been attached to . How else to account for the fact that a disorder that before 1990 was reported to affect just 4.7 out of every 10,000 American children now strikes 60 per 10,000, according to many estimates--the equivalent of 1 in 166 kids? But what if there is no epidemic? What if the apparent explosion in autism numbers is simply the unforeseen result of shifting definitions, policy changes and increased awareness among parents, educators and doctors? That's what George Washington University anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker persuasively argues in a new book sure to generate controversy. In Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism, Grinker uses the lens of anthropology to show how shifting cultural conditions change the way medical scientists do their work and how we perceive mental health. In addition to rising awareness of autism, Grinker points to these factors: BROADER DEFINITIONS Each successive edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders--the bible of mental health--has revised the criteria for identifying autism in ways that tend to include more people. Two conditions on the milder end of the autistic spectrum--Asperger's syndrome and the awkwardly named PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified)--were added to the DSM in 1994 and 1987, respectively. Grinker and others say 50% to 75% of the increase in diagnoses is coming in these milder categories. SCHOOL POLICY U.S. schools are required to report data on kids who receive special-education services, but autism wasn't added as a category until the 1991-92 school year. No wonder the numbers exploded--from 22,445 receiving services for autism in 1995 to 140,254 in 2004. Grinker points out that "traumatic brain injury" also became one of the 13 reportable categories in 1992, and it had a similar spike. MORE HELP, LESS STIGMA As services have become more available for kids with autism, more parents are seeking a diagnosis they would have shunned 30 years ago, when psychiatrists still blamed autism on chilly "refrigerator" mothers. Doctors are also more willing to apply the diagnosis to help a patient. "I'll call a kid a zebra if it will get him the educational services I think he needs," National Institute of Mental Health psychiatrist Judith Rapoport told Grinker. FINANCIAL INCENTIVES In some states, parents of children with autism can apply for Medicaid even if they are not near the poverty line. A diagnosis of mental retardation doesn't always offer this advantage. RELABELING For all the reasons above, many kids previously given other diagnoses are now called autistic. University of Wisconsin researcher Paul Shattuck has found that the number of kids getting special-ed services for retardation and learning disabilities declined in 47 states between 1994 and 2003, just as those getting help for autism was rising. In 44 states, the drop exceeded the rise in autism. As convincing as Grinker's analysis seems, arguments about the apparent epidemic will probably continue. It's simply impossible to accurately reconstruct the past incidence of the disorder, given how radically definitions have changed. Those who believe the increase is real often focus on the mysterious paucity of autistic adults. With their conspicuous symptoms like hand flapping and little or no language, "I think we would be recognizing them in institutions," says Dr. Robert Hendren, executive director of the M.I.N.D. Institute at the University of California, Davis. Grinker's answer is that autistic adults are out there but wearing other labels. "Where are all the adults with fetal alcohol syndrome?" he asks. No one over 40 has the condition, thought to affect up to 1 in 500 kids today, because it was not recognized until the mid-'70s. "But no one would say alcoholism among pregnant women just started," says Grinker. Grinker, whose 15-year-old daughter is autistic, concedes that there's something reassuring about the idea of an epidemic: "Thinking about any disorder as an epidemic is easier than thinking about it in terms of multiple causes, shifting definitions and a scientific reality we are only just beginning to understand." Besides, if a disease suddenly spikes, it seems more plausible that the increase could be reversed--if only we could find the mysterious environmental trigger. With autism, though, that hopeful scenario seems just too simple. Way to go TIME magazine and Claudia Wallis! Way to go Dr. Grinker! What's with Dr. Hendren's response? If people refuse to go look to see if autistic adults are in the "institutions" or even see how many are autism spectrum adults are teaching at UC Davis, just in the psychology department alone... they can guarantee that they won't find the "missing autistic adults." The UCD psychology department is an institution Dr. Hendren can start looking at right there close to him and everything. Here's a hint, if Hendren looks he will probably find at least three spectrum psych professors. Another professor has a sister and father on the spectrum and another professor says her mother is probably diagnosable as Asperger's. Then there's the engineering professors and the biologists... more there that Autism Diva knows about, and tons more at other universities, some identified as being on the spectrum, some not. At least one professor is an "out of the closet" autistic at Berkeley, one at UCLA and how about that Nobel Prize winner in economics, he's at a university, too. Besides Temple Grandin. Yes, they need too look for autistics in care facilities, but that's not the only place they'd be found... but they'll be found only if someone looks. And another fantastically easy place to look for the missing adults is among the parents who take their kids to the MIND Institute. Like, how obvious is that? Autism Diva was at the MIND Institute last night for a presentation, there appeared to be at least one other autism spectrum adult there, and two women counselors who are married to men with Asperger's, one of them has a grown Asperger's son who is a PhD student at UCD. What's that old expression? There are none so blind as those who will not see? Autism Diva visible Cheap AutoCAD 2005 oem software Cheap Special Offer 6 cheap AutoCAD 2005

Selling the epidemic

Posted on June 07, 2008 in Generic prescription drug list

The quoted text below is from Jeff Sell, Esq. of the Autism Society of America apparently responding to the recent article in TIME magazine on the soon to be released book by Dr. Roy Grinker, Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism . This "comment" by Mr. Sell, Esq. went out recently to various chapters of ASA via e-mail: Jeff Sell, Esq. Director of Chapters & Membership Autism Society of America Jeff Sell Comment: The debate over whether there is an autism epidemic and, whether or not the increases are rooted in diagnostic substitution, financial incentives (huh?), better diagnosing, broader definitions or whatever is so dog-gone irrelevant in my personal opinion. 1. The CDC has identified that there are 1 in 166 children with autism in this country. 2. They all need services and supports. 3. Since there are 1 in 166 children in the US with autism; that is a HEALTH CARE CRISIS. To continue this debate is boring and rather silly; not to mention a complete waste of time. It is pretty hard to miss head banging, hand flapping, screaming, spinning, poop smearing children who can't talk..Same old garbage generated by Mr. Grinker's so-called "thought provoking" book (with very little footnotes); not even a new twist to attempt to discount the MIND Institute Report to the Legislature on the Principal Findings from, The /mindinstitute/newsroom/study _final.pdf> Epidemiology of Autism in California - October 17, 2002 or scores of epi studies. Yeah, and they talk about autistics spinning things. Speaking of 1 in 166 children on the autism spectrum (the majority of whom are not "classic autistics"), the science has also identified that the rate for adults is about 1 in 166, too, Mr. Sell. Thinking about all those adults is just boring and silly. Now Autism Diva will explain this next part r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y for Mr. Sell, Esq. The Autism Society of America the organization YOU rep-re-sent, Mr. Sell, it claims that there are about 1 and a half million (1,500,000) people in America who are autistic. That would be about a half million children and guess who makes up the remaining one million autistics? No. Go ahead, Mr. Sell. Guess! That's right! There are more autistic adults in this country than non-adults also known as minors or children. That's YOUR 1 in 166 figure ap-plied to the whole pop-u-lay-shun of the U-nite-ed States, young and old. This figure is not just derived by Autism Diva, but also by YOUR OR-GAN-NIGH-ZAY-SHUN. By denying that there are nearly one million autistic adults, your very organization helps to sentence these autistic adults to getting no help, or to getting help under labels such as "schizophrenic" or "stubborn" or "mentally retarded" which is probably not the best way for autistic adults to get help. Autism Diva spoke with Lee Grossman about this problem, the denial of the existence of autistic adults that is embedded in his epidemic rhetoric. Later, in his presentation to the MIND he showed a graph that was supposed to represent the epidemic, and he said, "I don't even believe what this graph shows." He also said something like, "I will continue to use the word 'epidemic' if it gets people's attention." This is what he said to those assembled for the MIND's mini-DAN conference. Autism Diva believes that Lee Grossman, president of ASA, KNOWS for a fact that there hasn't been an epidemic. Which begs the question, "Why hasn't ASA decided to come clean about the fact that they've been promoting a non-existant autism epidemic for a few years now?" It's interesting to contrast the little rant from Jeff Sell, Esq., of Autism Society of America with the following appeal for donations that came also from the Autism Society of America , a few weeks ago. December 14, 2006 (From Lee Grossman) Dear ______, If you read the November 27th Newsweek article on autism, you may have been struck, as I was, with the last quote: "When Isabel achieves something, I feel like we're a team, like we all did it, and I feel incredibly rewarded. Posted on June 07, 2008 in Generic prescription drug list

After years of crying, "epidemic" Autism Society of America, UC Davis MIND Institute, Various Researchers, Cure Autism Now, Autism Speaks. Will they now say...? "Oh, did we say...? ' cuz we don't remember... ever actually saying... autism epidemic..." Dr. Roy Richard Grinker's new book is stirring up lots of discussion on the faux autism epidemic (Amazon has shipped a copy Autism Diva ordered, and Autism Diva already has a galley of the book). Apparently, the book is going to sell very well, and that without a group of people buying ten copies at time like the mercury parents did with Kirby's book, Evidence of Manipulation . The major mercury parents are FREAKING about Grinker's book, as well they should, it's going to undo the common belief that there's been an epidemic of autism. The only reason the belief in the epidemic got to be so common was that groups like SAFE MINDS have been paying PR firms to keep the faux epidemic of autism supposely "caused by thimerosal in childhood vaccines" in the news. Cure Autism Now's budget had a big chunk devoted to PR and CAN has been run by queen mercury mom, Sallie Bernard for a few years now. The UCD MIND Institute had some magazine ads and videos made by an advertising firm to promote the devastation and epidemic rhetoric. Their current magazine ads are slightly softer toned, but still offensive. For years certain individuals and certain groups have screamed about the devastation wrought on various wealthy economies by the faux autism epidemic. Very few people challenged these assertions. Very few people ever bothered to look at the data that was being misrepresented to show an "epidemic," lots of people just sucked the epidemic rhetoric down as true. Anyone who questioned the epidemic was mocked by people like Andrew Wakefield and Harvard's Martha Herbert. How dare anyone question the likes of these two? Anyone who questioned the epidemic was villified by the likes of Lenny Schafer of the "Schafer Autism" report and J.B. Handley of Generation Rescue and Swander Pace. Some people who opposed the epidemic rhetoric got death threats! J.B. Handley sent at least one email with the death-threat-like statement, "May God have mercy on your soul." Many who question the epidemic have been harassed on the Internet with other kinds of threats and various attempts at intimidation. So now that the autism epidemic is dying on the vine (dead in the water, up the creek without a paddle, twisting in the wind, looking like a lost cause), what will all the big media outlets and autism organizations who have been stating it as a fact do to save face (do damage control, spin doctor) their way out of their humiliation at having been duped and having helped to spread the falsehood? Here's what looks like an early attempt by Autism Speaks to soften the rage of the mercury parents that is already being aimed at this up-until-now epidemic promoter. Is Autism an Epidemic? Anthropologist Argues No; But What Are Your Thoughts? How did autism shift from being a rare disorder, occurring in 3 in 10,000 people, to an "epidemic," occurring in 1 in 166 people? A controversial new book by anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker claims it didn't. "An increase in prevalence," Grinker says, "is different from an epidemic." He notes that the current rate of 1 in 166 is the best and most accurate rate we've ever had but is not necessarily evidence of an epidemic. In Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism , Grinker undertakes a global study of autism beginning with the personal story of his autistic daughter Isabel and his family's battles with the school system. Grinker uses his research on autism in the United States and abroad to argue that there is no evidence for an autism epidemic, at least epidemic as it is traditionally defined by the medical community. Instead, he writes, the high rates of diagnosis today are evidence that scientists are finally, after all these years, counting cases correctly. Many parents of children with autism say they disagree with Grinker?s theory. What's your view? Are we in the midst of an autism epidemic? Or are we, as Grinker argues, doing a better job of recognizing what's always been there? Share your thoughts by emailing us here. We'll post selected responses to the web site the week of Jan. 22. Click here for a book excerpt in which Grinker focuses on his family's personal experience with autism. To learn more about Professor Grinker or obtain a copy of the book, visit the Unstrange Minds web site. Also, see coverage of the epidemic debate at Time.com and Slate.com. How cheesy is this? Many parents of children with autism say they disagree with Grinker?s [sic] theory. It looks like, Autism Speaks isn't asking to hear from parents who agree with Grinker's "theory." They didn't expect to hear from many people who had actually read the book, either. Couldn't this little request for comment on the book have gone out after the book is actually available in stores? And while on the one hand it looks like Autism speaks is attacking Grinker's book, they are also voluntarily promoting Grinker's book. Weird. Check out what Bartholomew Cubbins has to say about the self-contradictory stance of AS. Kevin Barry used to work with JB Handley on Handley's little "Generation Rescue" all-autism-is-is-mercury-poisoning project. Now Barry does "consulting" for Autism Speaks , maybe he works with its "spin" department? Here is the text of an email Kevin Barry apparently sent to Heidi Roger: "Hi Heidi, Confidential. I am not allowed to comment on the Boards. Would you post this to the EOH board as if you can upon it yourself? It is a page where people can comment on the epidemic "debate". It would not hurt if Autism Speaks heard more feedback from EOH parents. Thanks, Kevin http://www.autismspeaks.org/inthenews/grinker_unstrange_minds.php Do you suppose he meant, "as if you came upon it yourself," instead of "as if you can upon it yourself"? It seems he was saying that according to some sort of expectation, perhaps coming from Autism Speaks, he wasn't supposed to post things to Internet groups/boards. To get around this rule he decided to ask Heidi Roger to post something for him and to keep the source quiet (confidential). He didn't trust the EoHarm group to find that page on their own in due time. He apparently wanted Heidi to pretend that she came upon the web page herself... so what does Mrs. Roger, do? It appears that she just forwarded that email from Barry to the EOHarm group after she typed her message at the top and hit "Send," forgetting to delete Kevin Barry's "confidential" eyes-only message. Here's her little message: Hey, guys, I just noticed that Autism Speaks is seeking feedback on the Grinkers book. I would think many of us could respond. It would be good for Autism Speaks to hear our side of the story. thanks, Heidi Ooops. This was followed by what may now become known as the Heidigate coverup . Heidi Roger, treasurer for SAFE MINDS, sent another message to EoHarm Yahoo! Group the subject was, "Lenny I need your help" (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EOHarm/message/42397), her message was: "Lenny can you call me at [a phone number]." No doubt Heidi realized her mistake, but couldn't delete her own post from the group and wanted Lenny to do it. And he did delete the embarrassing post with Barry's little request in it. But it's not that easy to take back an email sent to a group or list, so many people saw Heidi's posts, despite Lenny's attempt to wipe out the evidence. So we can see that Heidi knew she had disclosed some sneaky doings on the part of Kevin Barry and she tried to hide undo the damage by hiding it. Lenny apparently understood what the problem was and so cooperated with the cover-up attempt. Does this rate as a conspiracy? Over all it's not a huge thing, but it's an interesting little peek into the motivations and personalities of some key mercury parents, n'est pas? Kathleen Seidel has written to Autism Speaks about Grinker's book and about the Heidigate coverup the on EoHarm Yahoo! group. Her letters are always polite and so informative. Autism Diva and others will be watching the various autism organizations and media outlets to see how they disentangle themselves from this web of toxic autism epidemic talk. We just may see some very creative backpeddling. Hate something Change something

Make something better. Hate something. Change something. Hate Something Change Something. Make something better (higher resolution version). This is a car engine commercial with an interesting message. The commerical is three years old, but Autism Diva had never seen it before yesterday. Maybe the commercial is old enough to be "retro" now. Maybe we could all watch it and think of old stinky, ineffiecient diesel engines as representing the current major autism organizations in the U.S. and Canada, and the happy critters and smiling sun out to rid their world of the stinky inefficency as the autistic adults and their friends who just want SOMETHING BETTER. As it is, it's hard to imagine a kind of advocacy that could be WORSE than the stuff coming from Autism Speaks, Inc., and Autism Society of America (and all the misinformation filled little mercury mom and dad organizations like "National Autism Association" and "Defeat Autism Now!" and the rest.) It would be hard to come up with scuzz worse than what David Kirby is mewling on the Huffpoof blog. Sometimes a critic will appear and comment negatively on the discussions around the autism-hub blogs and elsewhere, the critic's point is usually that there is too much anger coming from those promoting the idea of acceptance of autism, or that there's too much anger coming from "both sides." (Click here for a recent example) But Autism Diva will put it to you that this is because the critic doesn't "get" why some people are VERY angry at the "Autism Every Day" video and Autism Speaks, for instance, or at DAN! and NAA and the "Schafer Autism" Report. The problem lies in the fact that the critic hasn't been paying attention to why the bloggers and other advocates are so indignant and downright angry sometimes. Basically, the autistic advocates are angry because children and adults have died because of the general dehumanization of autistics and more specifically because of the mercury/autism mythology and more autistics will die if folks don't get over their rage at autism and don't start being more skeptical consumers of autism "cures." If autism "advocacy" organizations don't figure out what's wrong with an attitude like "autism knocked on the wrong door," a favorite tag-line of Suzanne Wright, she of of Autism Speaks (also, here), or "autistics are soulless kidnapped empty shells"a favorite theme of Cure Autism Now (.wmv file from CAN showing CAN's Peter Bell and son) and if these autism big-shots don't work hard to retract these sentiments, and replace them with something good and fine, then the harmful, even deadly fallout will continue. Can hate be good? Yes, if the hate is directed at hateful ideas that harms innocent people. Love is better than hate, though, and love is the preferred emotion, absolutely. Autism Diva hum along

Autism Diva has a subscription to New Scientist magazine. New Scientist is published in the U.K.. It seems to be aimed at people who work in research, as well as the general public. It includes more humor than do most science magazines. The information it offers, as far as Autism Diva has seen, isn't totally perfect but it seems to mostly be in line with current scientific thinking. A recent New Scientist edition has some really interesting articles on health and medicine. Cheap AutoCAD 2005 Cheap cakewalk Buy OEM Software cheap Macromedia Dreamweaver 8
