Opening Day At My Blog
Posted on October 09, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction
So mine is the @*%# Vol 1 story on the diabetesmine blog. If you haven't read it, it is kinda sad, a wee bit comical, a tad dramatic, and shows what a bad place I was in. I want to thank everyone that read it, especially those who gave such beautiful comments, and to Amy at diabetesmine, sixuntilme, and the'betes, who all gave me the courage to start trying again. It is so important to feel supported because this is a disease that can eat you alive and no one would notice. So I have been doing soo much better in the past few weeks and am meeting with a new team at the Naomi Berre center after Thanksgiving. In the recent past I have been less than keen on sharing my diabetes tales of woe with the world because I though "who cares." Well come to find out people do. And not just other diabetics, tons of normal healthy people (ok well I don't really know if "normal healthy" people actually exist - more like non diabetics) care as well. So recently I have taken to gushing at anyone who asks. Most people ask about the diabetes because of the Medic Alert bracelet, or the testing, or the needles (side note: has anyone else ever pretended they were shooting up something other than insulin because they were tired of people on the train/park/restaurant staring at them? I have and it is hysterical) and then another 25 questions follow. Generally people are fully freaked out to hear I got the DB for no apparent reason. I swear I had a flu bug that sounds like it could give the Avian Bird Flu a run for its money, and then came the DB. I explain the shots, the carb counting, the lows, the highs, the sugar tabs, all of it. Everyone love the stories of the lows because they tend to be quite funny once you are safe. Anyhoo the whole point of this diatribe is that my friend Erin recently saved the life of a diabetic because of my incessant "educational" stories. She had a patron at her table who started off very talkative and became progressively quiet as the night went on. She thought maybe he had a bit to much vino, but was worried because he didn't finish his meal and was just not with it. She also assumed the woman with him was his wife and would let her know if her was not OK. After eating and paying the bill he asked for a glass of OJ. Now FYI, once you have paid and tipped your server it is time to get up and give her the table back so she can make more money, therefore most servers would ignore such request, not wanting to open a whole check for a glass of OJ and running the risk of you camping out. But Erin has a diabetic friend (Me) and so her first thought was "Steel Magnolias" and "Shelby drink the juice" and "Julia Roberts bugging out" so she got him the juice ASAP. It was already to late. He was slumped over and not responding, drooling and unable to take any sugar. She called 911 and when the paramedic arrived it took them a full 20 min of pumping him full of sugar to get him back!! PLEASE tell others you have diabetes! The woman he was with was not his wife, but a co worker who had not idea what was going on. I always think I will be able to deal with a low and explain the situation but this makes me think that will not always be the case. This story scares the #@$! out of me and makes me realize a few things. We have a responsiblity to ourselves and all other diabetics to talk about this disease. Many people would have thought he was drunk and left him alone. The general public has gotten their diabetes education through Steel Magnolias and that is not OK. (to be perfectly honest that was all I knew when I got diagnosed. When the school nurse said diabetes I literaly had to fight the urge to say "juice is better") We are the only ones who can change these misconception and the only way we can do that is by talking about it. I don't mean to be preachy and as this blog progresses you will see that, but...I have recently felt very empowered by my diabetes and am determined to see it as a positive instead of a negative. My diabetes saved someone's life and that is about as positive as it gets. I have to go test now. You should too. Bye buy software cheap oem software

Lawsuits can fight fat
Posted on September 24, 2008 in Prescription drug insurance
By John F. Banzhaf III It took lawyers and litigation to start the civil rights, environmental protection, disability rights and anti-smoking movements. Legislators wouldn't act until the lawsuits caused change and produced publicity that led to laws and other reforms. For example, lawsuits aimed at smoking did what Congress refused to do: slashed smoking rates and returned hundreds of billions of dollars to taxpayers. Five fat lawsuits have already been successful and, as USA TODAY reported, they were a major factor in pressuring fast-food and other food companies to provide more nutritional information and more healthful alternatives, and to take other steps to reduce obesity. A court of impartial federal judges has now unanimously held that the same legal rules that apply to hundreds of products, from cigarettes to automobiles, should apply to fast food, and that those who sell it should be liable for their fair share of the costs if they misrepresent or fail to disclose risks that aren't common knowledge. USA TODAY opposes the suits, arguing for public education and personal responsibility. But expensive taxpayer-funded government educational campaigns weren't very effective in reducing smoking, race discrimination, sexual harassment or other behaviors, while lawsuits were. Face it, personal responsibility by itself simply hasn't worked for obesity any better than it did for smoking and the others, and it isn't likely to. Juries continue to rule that, while smokers must bear much of the responsibility for their own health, Big Tobacco must share some responsibility if its misconduct contributed to it. Surveys suggest that juries will apply the same principle in obesity cases, especially where young children are the innocent victims. After all, we don't hold sick children liable for the faults of their parents. Moreover, if fast-food companies are not held liable, or otherwise forced to change, the $117 billion-a-year cost of obesity will continue to be paid largely — and unfairly — by the non-obese in the form of higher taxes and bloated health insurance premiums. That's why, until lawmakers legislate against obesity, lawyers will continue to litigate against it — and probably continue to win. cheap oem software buy software

"Evidenced Based" "Show me the money" from a punch line in the 1996 “Jerry McGuire” to an idiom today. Type it into Google and you get 25 million that’s right, 25 million results. It’s' meaning has morphed to mean: ‘prove it,’ ‘show me’, where's the evidence? In care Jerry's admonition is "what's the evidence base?" Governments everywhere are demanding practitioners and companies show them the evidence. One could say not any too soon! In the complimentary, alternative, self- care genre, in Canada, two new government bureaus have been setup. Health Care Network is mandated to understand the policy dimension of complementary and alternative health care. These include: educational approaches, regulatory options, consumer utilization, information and informed choice issues. The Natural Health Products Directorateis the body that now licenses all natural health care products. For consumers informed choices are critical in self-care management. For business, in this environment, there's a demand for companies who create processes, products, and services that meet the 'evidence' test. Given recent controversies in prescription drug regulation, credible may well need to be added to the evidence based lexicon. For consumers an evidence based system has the potential to deliver vetted unbiased standards, which embrace safety and efficacy. For regulators it means rules need to be crafted with a patient /consumer based public health focus . There is a danger. Regulation can mean restriction, which benefits the status quo, while potentially disabling innovation. Consumer/patient diligence in the process needs to be high, remember Jerry's admonition, “show me", applies across the board when it comes to preserving our health, through unfettered access to a spectrum of therapies. buy software cheap oem software

The Eli Lilly tooth fairy
Posted on August 20, 2008 in Generic medical release
The Eli Lilly tooth fairy is disclosing who the company's favorite partners are. Alan Breier, Lilly's chief medical officer, whose division oversees the grant office, is quoted in The Wall Street Journal stating: "We desire to be a reliable and trusted partner and transparency is a critical aspect of trust." Did trust and transparency play a role in Eli Lilly's ferocious legal battle to keep the Zyprexa documents under seal? Those documents--as The New York Times reported--contain evidence showing that the company knew but concealed the diabetes risk of Zyprexa; and that despite warnings from doctors Lilly contracted, the company set forth on an aggressive marketing campaign for off-label uses in vulnerable populations [Link] [Link]. To this day, Lilly has failed to make public the number of attempted suicides reported during the Zyprexa pre-marketing clinical trials. The number of completed suicides in those trials, first reported by Robert Whitaker in Mad in America, was 12--more than in any other reported antipsychotic pre-marketing trials. Dr. Breier claims: "These grants are first and foremost designed to improve patient care, and they are unsolicited." The statement is at best disingenuous. Exactly how are the grants given to Lilly's partners in lobbying--the National Alliance for Mental Illness--$544,500--and Mental Health America--$94,000--"designed to improve patient care?" Neither NAMI nor MHA provide "patient care." The tooth fairy database is here. NAMI and MHA are in the forefront aggressively promoting industry-supported controversial mental health screening schemes whose beneficiaries are not patients. They are active promoters of TeenScreen which is designed to increase the patient base inasmuch as it has an 84% false-positive identification rate. By increasing the number of people designated as having a mental disorder, automatically increases psychotropic drug sales. Lilly's "beneficence" is an investment ensuring that there will be a steady stream of new customers for whom its drugs--Prozac, Cymbalta, and Zyprexa--will be prescribed. [Link] THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Under Criticism, Drug Maker Lilly Discloses Funding By AVERY JOHNSON May 1, 2007 Amid criticism that money from drug companies is overly influential in the practice of medicine, Eli Lilly & Co. for the first time plans to release a detailed report today on its grants to nonprofit groups and educational institutions. [Link] Recipients of the $11.8 million that the Indianapolis-based drug maker gave out in the first quarter of 2007 include some of the best-known medical institutions in the country, a range of foundations devoted to disease research and education and some for-profit companies specializing in continuing medical education for doctors. The largest single grant was $825,000 to Massachusetts General Hospital's psychiatry department for a year-long educational program with more than 150,000 registrants. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, an advocacy group for patients, received $544,500. Of that, $450,000 went to fund a project called "Campaign for the Mind of America." Some grants went to for-profit education companies. Optima Educational Solutions, based in Arlington Heights, Ill., received nearly $75,000 for a project called "Current Strategies and Needs for Managing the Critically Ill Patient with Diabetes." Lilly's best-selling drug is Zyprexa, a schizophrenia medicine that has come under scrutiny for serious side effects, including obesity and diabetes, in long-term users. It also makes insulins like Humulin and Humalog and sells the diabetes drug Byetta with Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. But Lilly says there is no connection between its grants and efforts to market its drugs. "These grants are first and foremost designed to improve patient care, and they are unsolicited," says Alan Breier, Lilly's chief medical officer, whose division oversees the grant office. "We desire to be a reliable and trusted partner and transparency is a critical aspect of trust." Lilly plans to list its grants on its grant-office Web site quarterly. Lilly's move reflects how, amid increasing criticism, some drug companies have begun to lift the veil on their funding. Drug makers' grants help cover the costs of nonprofit groups that raise awareness about diseases and treatment options for patients. The money also goes to educational institutions that provide doctors with courses to keep their licenses up-to-date. But critics argue grants curry favor with physicians and influential organizations, and allow companies to defend newer, more expensive medications against generic remedies and expand use of medicines for unapproved purposes. The companies, including Lilly, say these funds help assure that patients and doctors have up-to-date information on treatment options. Only a handful of drug companies have begun revealing funding details, and it's not clear how many others will follow. Lilly's decision to disclose its grants was prompted in part by an investigation into drug company donations by the Senate Finance Committee. The committee's report last week said while there is separation between grants and sales and marketing, potential for abuse remains. Some Eli Lilly executives had worried revealing the company's grants could expose recipients to criticism and bring more scrutiny. But ultimately, Lilly decided to disclose the details after an internal analysis showed the marketing department wasn't influencing the grant office's decisions, says Michael Bigelow, Lilly's assistant general counsel. Lilly shouldn't have to feel "apologetic" about the grants, he adds. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, says "Eli Lilly's action is a positive step, and I hope other drug companies will do the same thing." A Lilly spokesman says the company funds about a third of the grant proposals received. The majority of grants are awarded in categories in which the company markets medicines. The spokesman says that's because grant seekers are aware of Lilly's expertise and because the company's reviewers are more knowledgeable in those areas. In deciding on a particular grant, Lilly considers the potential clinical value of the projects and whether they would improve patient care. The Wellness Community, a nonprofit focused on cancer, got a $37,500 Lilly grant last quarter for a program called "Frankly Speaking about Lung Cancer." Lilly makes Alimta, a drug to treat lung cancer. The Wellness Community's president and chief executive, Kim Thiboldeaux, says it shouldn't necessarily be a "bad thing" when nonprofit and drug company interests align: "They want to get information to patients and so do we," she said, adding that her organization presents information without any influence from the funding companies. Asked about the Eli Lilly grant, Jerrold Rosenbaum, psychiatrist-in-chief at Massachusetts General Hospital, says, "We issued a challenge to the pharmaceutical industry: You say you believe in [continuing medical education], then give to academic institutions without any direct knowledge of what the curriculum will be." He says his program receives funding from a number of drug companies and that their support doesn't influence its content. "We have strict guidelines that govern corporate relationships and protect against conflicts of interest," says Bob Carolla, NAMI's director of media relations. "We do not endorse any specific treatment, medication, service or product." Other drug makers have begun taking steps toward fuller disclosure. Earlier this year, GlaxoSmithKline PLC started posting online its payments to European groups that work as advocates for patients. The posts show that Glaxo, based in London, gave about $12.2 million to 424 groups last year. Glaxo was spurred by new rules from the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. Pfizer Inc. yesterday began posting an online status report on follow-up studies the Food and Drug Administration has required for company drugs already on the market. Critics have hammered the drug industry for not living up to these commitments and the FDA for not enforcing them adequately. But some critics say disclosure does little to make up for the fact that drug companies have become such important benefactors of education, especially continuing education for physicians. "Drug companies are not educational institutions," says Eric Campbell, assistant professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. "They're beholden to stockholders and exist to develop and sell drugs," he says. Earlier|Later|Main Page Labels: Kickbacks, Lilly

This podcast was posted to the web on 13 January 2006 at: http://www.speedofcreativity.org/2006/01/13/podcast29-thinking-critically-about-web-20/ The show notes for this podcast included the following: "Is enthusiasm for web 2.0 and its potential to positively reform educational teaching methods across the globe overblown? An international audience including Darren Kuropatwa in Canada, Ewan McIntosh in Scotland, Miguel Guhlin in San Antonio, Texas, and Wesley Fryer in Lubbock, Texas, engaged in a lively discussion this evening via skype to explore these and other issues. Specifically, the questions we addressed were: Is enthusiasm in the blogsphere for web 2.0 overblown, since the realities of the modern, accountability-driven classroom overpower individual drives for creative innovation? Is there hope for systemic school reform in the United States and elsewhere in the world? Should schools repurpose their existing educational technology budgets, which largely serve now to support a traditional transmission-based model (pedagogy) of instruction? (And do something radical instead, like pay their teachers more?!)" Wesley Fryer is a prolific blogger and podcaster, and has his personal blog at: http://speedofcreativity.org/ I hope you enjoy this podcast! Education sector requirements - big business opportunity
Posted on July 30, 2008 in Compound pharmacy
This morning I came crosswise a publication of Skill Cosmos – Uncommon Census, January, 2007. The publishers recourse it “path-breaking first-of-its-type particular information.” The stated aim is to invent “a platform possible thanks to the country’s margin institutional needs suppliers to recite prospective schools broadly their excellent products as well services.” This sector could very well be what the editorial calls the last frontier of the Indian economy. Look at the enormous volume – 900,000 primary and 133,000 secondary schools, 17,700 colleges, 344 universities, 950 management schools, over a hundred ‘international’ schools, 120 million students, 5 million teachers! And the outlay? Over 110,000 crores, (say nearly US$ 27.5 billions?) This amount might double in the next three years. (All figures except the US $ conversion are from Education World .) What are the needs of the educational sector? Anything from pencils to buses. Education World lists them: desks, chairs, blackboards, audio-visual learning systems, personal computers, air conditioning, laundry, kitchen and water cooling [and purification] systems; classroom equipment such as text and notebooks, black and white boards, pens, pencils etc and consumables such as convenience foods, toiletries and snack-foods, beverages and fruits and vegetables. Items like uniforms, school bags umbrellas are not mentioned, but they too are part of the requirement. It would appear that a major portion of this market is being catered to by local or regional small enterprises. According to Education World, “Invariably the quality of supplies is uneven and variable.” What I feel is that the field is so vast that it can accommodate all kinds and sizes of players – from household enterprises to big companies. With India ’s focus on literacy and the huge volume, this is a segment that is bound to grow rapidly. The present trend is for parents to provide better education to their children than what they had. And the schools, particularly in the private sector, are constantly improving in quality. Ends. The Pharmacy Jobs Market In The UK
Posted on July 27, 2008 in Discount pharmacies
The role of the in the daily lives of many people throughout the UK is as important as any other consumer institution. After all, the increase in ailments owing to age, lack of exercise, and general poor health means, for many, a regular trip to see the pharmacist. The old pharmacy, where the friendly pharmacist works with you to meet your health needs, has given way to a more bureaucratic system that is effective in dealing with a wide range of customers but lacks the human touch. However, for pharmacists and those graduating with pharmaceutical degrees, this bureaucratisation of the pharmacy means a better jobs market. Hospitals and doctors’ offices are beginning to hire more pharmacists for their in-house pharmacies. These pharmacies, which feature both over-the-counter and prescription drugs, are designed to provide immediate point-of-prescription convenience for patients, especially those who have mobility problems. Pharmacists in these types of offices have the luxury of working directly with billing professionals and health workers alike to remedy health issues quickly. However, in other ways the in-house pharmacy may prove restrictive, as administrators and senior partners are often within walking distance. There is, however, still room for the traditional pharmacist in the current bureaucratic system. Older style pharmacies are utilising information technology in order to improve the services they provide; patients with repeat prescriptions are often able to have these monitored by pharmacies who will collect them for the patient from the general practitioner and ensure their availability. In many high street outlets, major chains and independent pharmacists are investing heavily in order to compete. Facilities are often brand new, which means the best resources and working conditions for pharmacists. Also, members of the public can build a strong relationship with their pharmacist as they get regular prescriptions. The problem with working at these facilities is that there is sometimes little immediate resolution of administrative or prescription problems, which need to be resolved by phone or post. The pharmacy jobs market in the United Kingdom and Europe is growing strongly, although its public face is becoming much different from what it was a generation ago. Pharmacists need to remain versatile in the workplace by maintaining accreditation, taking continuing educational courses, and staying well-versed in regulations and medical knowledge alike; after all, to many of the public, the pharmacist is often more accessible than the doctor, and acts as a resource for medical knowledge in the marketplace. As such, pharmacists have a public duty to stay updated and informed on the changing nature of their world. This challenge and the challenge of optimising one’s potential in a dynamic job market, means that a pharmacist needs to stay on his or her toes throughout their professional life.
