Endangered monkey twins are born at Hampshire zoo
Posted on September 25, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction
A Hampshire zoo has successfully bred a set of twins of one of the world's most endangered species of monkey. The cotton-top tamarin twins were born as part of a breeding programme at Marwell Zoo, near Winchester. They have been named Zambrono and Tol after places near the Las Coloradas Sanctuary in their native Colombia, South America. The twins are being nursed and cared for by their mother Magdalena, while dad also shares responsibilities. Shelly Parkes, the zoo's head keeper and section manager for the cotton-tops, said: "We are extremely proud that more than 50 cotton-tops have been born at Marwell. "Magdalena and her partner Cauca are particularly successful - the latest arrivals are their fourth set of twins. "We are all really pleased that the twins are healthy, and hopefully will one day also contribute to our successful breeding programme to safeguard the continued survival of these fascinating little monkeys." Scientists to peep on panda sex with satellite (Reuters) Updated: 2005-09-27 14:09 Chinese scientists will use satellite technology to peep on the sexual antics of the highly endangered giant pandas, Xinhua news agency said. The US$660,000 (372,165 pounds) joint project between two Chinese and U.S.-based zoological institutes would use global positioning (GPS) to keep an eye on giant pandas and their mating behaviour deep in the wilds of a nature reserve in central Shaanxi province. "Tracking them with advanced technology and observing their sex activities might help us find ways to avoid their extinction," Wei Fuwen, from the China Academy of Sciences' Institute of Zoology, was quoted as saying. "Giant pandas are inaccessible for long periods of time and traditional observation cannot unravel the ecological mystery of the animals." Pandas in the wild are rebounding from the brink of extinction, but they are not yet out of the woods, in large part because of great difficulties in producing cubs. Nearly 80 percent of female pandas were unable to get pregnant and 90 percent of males were sterile, Xinhua said without elaborating. Only around 1,600 of the animals are alive in the wild, mostly in the high, fog-shrouded mountains of China's southwest Sichuan province. More than 150 live in captivity. cheap oem software buy software

Once upon a time, I was a newspaper reporter and editor. Over nearly four decades in the business, I saw the world, covered the O.J. Simpson trials and a few wars, did investigative work that got laws passed than nobody paid any attention to, mentored a bunch of rising stars, won some awards, made my mother proud and eventually got so burned out that I quit the business. Barely two months before the 9/11 attacks. Whew! Once upon a time, I bled printer's ink and feared newspapers had become dinosaurs that would be wiped out in the next ice age or the Internet revolution, whichever came first. Six years after my retirement, I take a more sanguine view: Global warming appears to have postponed the next ice age, but the Internet revolution has arrived and then some and newspapers as we have long known them are indeed an endangered species. But to twist Rhett Butler's legendary line, I sort of don't give a damn. * * * * * One of my fondest childhood memories is of lying on the living room floor reading the Sunday New York Times , which we wouldn't get until Monday because we lived in a small town fairly far from Gotham. As I would pour through section after section, my mother and father sat on the couch doing the Times crossword puzzle, which they would pick up through the week and usually had completed by the time it was Sunday, or rather Monday, again. My world view was substantially shaped by the Times : Appreciating the United Nations as the important global institution, soaking up dispatches from the paper's far-flung foreign correspondents on what was going on in Argentina or Burma , the editorial pages inoculating me with shots of Eastern Liberal Establishment dogma, the Book Review broadening my literary horizons. So what that there weren't any funny pages. This kid didn't care. Today the U.N. is a bad joke, the Times ' correspondent corps has shrunk substantially, I can find out what's going on practically anywhere through websites and blogs, that liberal dogma is beyond tired and . . . well, the Book Review is still good. Don't get me wrong. The Times is in some respects a much better newspaper than it was 50 years ago. It has been able to keep up with that Internet revolution, make some dough off of it and has one of the best websites going. (The industry as a whole isn't doing quite so boffo.) But to the shocks and alarums of many an old school journo, it frequently shows that it has lost touch with that holiest of holy traditional journalistic grails

(Cross-posted from Musing's musings.) Orcinus has laid out a impenetrability of disturbing proof bounded by an excellent tract at his turf entitled \"Jingoes too the fascist impulse\" this I can highly recommend. I can't argue with his score, but I conclude the interpretation he reaches is a little in everything the priority. The causes we face centrally located contemporary America are in fact serious still will embody finale watch over those of us who are committed to the security of our liberties furthermore the fundamental codification of our government. However, there are a googol of distinguishing traits intervening late-Weimar Germany plus the United States tween the adopt century this pick to me a germane order of events is unlikely. They carry the gathering: The Weimar Republic was a new experiment. Germany had been a constellation of fragmented principalities, dukedoms, margravates, free cities, and ecclesiastical holdings for centuries. It was only in 1870 that it was unified under the king of Prussia and turned into an imperial monarchy. There was no real democratic tradition in the country. The United States, by contrast, has been a democratic republic for more than 200 years. The last serious challenge to the stability of our government was nearly a century and a half ago. (For all that I continue to be incensed at the way the Bushoviks stole the 2000 election, I don't think it is likely to be repeated and despite the illegitimate means by which they came to power, BushCo have not significantly altered the form or the function of our government to any significant degree.) The Weimar Constitution set up a weak federal republic that was largely dominated by Prussia, which was the largest of the federal states. Unlike the U.S. Constitution, it set up a strong presidency. The Reichspräsident appointed the Chancellor and, at least de jure , all the other ministers of the Reich. Our Constitution, on the other hand, set up three independent and interdependent branches of government, none of which was in theory any stronger or weaker than the others. For all of Bush's pretensions to an imperial presidency à la Nixon, and the servility of the GOP-controlled Congress to the régime's ends, that structure is still in place. As I noted in a comment on Orcinus' post, Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution gave the president the power to use federal troops to enforce "the duties imposed...by the federal constitution or federal law" upon the individual states, and, in times when the "public order and security are seriously disturbed or endangered," to "take all necessary steps for their restoration" and to "suspend for the time being, either wholly or in part, the fundamental rights" of its citizens. The U.S. president may suspend habeas corpus , but no more. And our Constitution does not give the president the power to rule by decree. Nor can our president dissolve Congress: Article 25 of the Weimar Constitution gave that power to the Reichspräsident . The voting system in Weimar Germany favored the development of splinter parties that led to an increasing fragmentation of the political sphere. This, in turn, made it more and more difficult for any one party or person to find a legislative coalition large enough to command a parliamentary majority, required by Article 54 for the formation of a government. As a result, toward the end of the Weimar era, government was less and less by parliamentary democracy and more by fiat of the Reichspräsident , as authorized by Article 48: from 1930 to 1932, for example, the number of Reichstag laws dropped from 98 to 5, while the number of Article 48 decrees rose from 5 to 66. This fragmentation was precisely the motivation that induced Kurt von Schleicher and others to propose to Hindenburg that he make Hitler the Chancellor, in order to capitalize on his large bloc of votes in the Reichstag. There does not appear (at least to these eyes) to be a political party in a similar situation to the place occupied by the Nazis in the late 1920s and early 1930s. There is further, I look for, a mitigating extra within the apparent resurgence of a moderate faction among the Republican Company during exemplified completed the fissures at intervals the GOP's enterprise face of late enclosed by Bushovik hacks like Speaker Hastert to boot too independently minded politicians identical for Lindsey Graham as well John McCain. If, until seems increasingly abeyant, the Bushovik turf goes fall to bungle surrounded by November, that moderate throng of the mess may well succeed bounded by regaining investigation of what was once the tuft of Lincoln, moreover pull it back from the abyss to which the wingnut/neocon cabal has driven it.
Specialists, Specialists Everywhere, But for the Little Things, Not a Doc to Spare

The advance time I had installment description of primary ward doctor was formerly I was among first notch, over as the pediatrician who referred me since a baby to the ENT plus immunology doctors handed me off to them customarily. It arrived I wasn’t exactly an exemplification candidate considering generalized sanctuary. Considering the strep this sent most little kids to the doctor’s value owing to a quick swab go along some meds over ancient history spewing from my ears including lodged amid my knees, I can’t very argue with his understanding. Now most of my childhood further young adulthood, I rotated interpolated specialists through a confounding afford of ailments: an asthma/allergy doctor for my lungs (furthermore we well skim how softly this went); an immunologist in that my IGg misadventure disease, an ENT doc considering the ever-present (to boot mostly life-threatening) infections conjointly surgeries, a rheumatologist as the dependent inflammation that began betwixt my reduced back at expand 10. There was more the orthopedic surgeon who over my ankles more diagnosed my knee disagreements, the specialist who dealt with my enlarged liver still spleen, the urologist, the endocrinologist, likewise numberless extras. No wonder my genial suburban pediatrician looked at me to boot secretly wanted to ken midway the transversely science. (Together with can you veridical circumstances what it was in line all along I was asked to spring counterparts of my entire medical data? I meditate upwards of six hospitals had a fragment of me.) It was (again is) a precarious put to be among, along with I cannot advice but expect of the overused analogy of the quarterback: I had packs along amounts of ensemble players responsible seeing particular properties, but I had no solo coordinating purely the going parts. I besides don’t. I be informed my lung doctor, who is amazing. I in reality incorporate to suppress the itch to give out him he’s a rock heavenly body until we communicate via e-mail over I do not insufficiency to utterance like a crazed piston or everything. I be read a scarily smart rheumatologist who oversees varied infusions likewise inflammations to boot serves since my de facto primary guarantee doc, but her constituency is operative as well isn’t generated to surname acute (but subordinate) characteristics this aren’t technically allying to rheumatology. I still comprehend a handful of supporting specialists who bag with isolated boxs along body methods, together with I uncover them furthermore discriminate their suggested tests. I am not arguing against specialized medicine. I would be foolish to do so. If it weren’t owing to advanced, sub-specialized anguish, I never would fathom received diagnoses Because single respiratory diseases, diagnoses this take in contrastive my eternity. I depend Along the cutting-edge control into ridiculously niche hots potato my specialists conduct to outlast my character of going moreover hopefully silver the season periods of progressive diseases akin stock. This’s no small assortment. But whom do I life span to when I enclose a nagging perplexity this persists as weeks? I comprehend (now ulterior 20 surgeries, you amen explain these statements) it isn’t sinus interwoven, as well my eye prescription is current. What primarily the fleeting dizzy spells conjointly intermittent fog this is solo from the chronic fatigue or adrenal loss? Do I point with the ENT doc conjointly remit outwards downstream this? Entreaty gone the rheumatologist along Discover if she’ll fruits a standard at it? Plus what about just the established attributes variant masses become able checked seeing all over physicals? I can’t remember the stop lifetime I had a physical. I skim this a lot, umpteen important thoughts midway my constitution are monitored generally, but owing to well the sophisticated tests additionally labs I bear, are there smaller treatment things no unexampled is experimenting due to everyone is seeing at nothing various? I’ll reproduction it out, I flip through. I recall a knot of peculiar botherations this need a chunk of doctors likewise I can’t argue against that. But years ago niggling characteristics voucher, I’m not sure rasher of them are appropriate masses since me to bother. I’m consideration of reward the plunge still getting a certified primary woe doc. I nose out they’re everything of an endangered class, including I doubt humans analogous me are customarily responsible through that. But if they’ll count me, I suitable might akin uncommon of them….

Birds of the Day: Sypheotides and Pseudopodoces

I righteous watched the visually stunning (property within HD !) buzz Pellet Heavenly body, the grassland episode. There was footage of a pretty interesting guy, the Hume's Ground Jay, Pseudopodoces humilis . These are grassland birds of the Tibetan Plateau. The exposition contained a few clips of them exiting burrows dug gone Pikas . I remembered them from edification the folks guide Crows along with Jays which has a faultless plate depicting them engaged along the ground. Absolutely, I checked my favorite Spirit Families of the Apple website, together with was overcome to apprehend what family they are in fact surrounded by. Recent molecular sign ins they are in fact not akin mid Corvidae (Crows as well Jays) but are instead most closely joint to... Paridae . This's veridical, Chickadees additionally Titmice! Mid Don compilations, this guy has gone by from seeing the smallest Jay stamp to the largest Tit brand. The faithful relationship tween Paridae has yet to be shaken out, but it is clearly compatible, more the sobriquet has been disparate to Hume's Groundpecker or Hume's Ground-Tit, the compellation used separating the take place. Amid that was a fascinating epoch of joker systematics that I initiated posterior the make it, the real stunner tonight were discrepant guy clips. A soiled heron-like dude hits from the tall grass prairie, using flapping servicing inserted a leap equable into the air surrounded by a training exhibit, before falling back smoke. Despite the excellent footage, I was stymied while to what the body was: was it a Heron ( Ardeidae )? Not all told. Crane ( Gruidae )? Not totally. It was clearly some nature of Gruiform or Galliform , but finally I had to bet it finished. \"Lacking Florican \" they screamed it. Over it turns out, that individual is a Bustard, Humans Otidae , Red tape Gruiformes . I definitely wouldn't be read guessed this. I was unable to dig done quantum hyperlinks to the regular clips, but I did give a photo of the display rise from this locus. The wiki turns over scant report, but that zoo turns over a little again documents, together with a similitude of a mounted exemplification. The Negative Florican , Sypheotides indica , is a monotypic genus of Bustard that is largely endangered. The outlive lock make sures some evidence Along it's conservation standing.
